Focus on Results

Recognition is based on good results — what we do. Reinforce the best effort, boost top performance, and point to high standards. Leads to more good behavior because the effort and results are noticed. Sometimes works — behavioral science pins it at about 20% effective.

Focus on the Person

Appreciation is based on value of the person — who we are. Not pretending someone did a good job when they didn’t. Rather, reinforce you are part of the team and I as the leader still believe in you. Is there anything you need right now? Higher returns are possible — about 40% effective in coaching situations.
