Wider Range as an Executive

Via “The Skip” newsletter by Nikhyl Singhal:
How Big Tech, management and IC roles have changed

When I guide executives in how to deepen their building and crafting skills, I give them a framework consisting of five areas of ambiguity to master:

  1. Growth, or scaling up a product;
  2. Market, or building things that have a differentiated strategy;
  3. Organizational, or managing big projects that span multiple conflicting goals;
  4. Domain, or deep area of the market to master;
  5. Team, or hiring and managing people.

Emphasis is mine on the fourth.

Lance’s note in May 2024: I’d like to keep going deeper on the domains where I know the most today:

  • Content creation, publishing, & distribution
  • Content optimization & audience building
  • Customer relationships (sales, marketing, customer success)
  • Freemium, PLG (product-led growth), and ecosystem-led business models
  • Product-driven GTM

When combined with a strong team and winning products, this depth creates even more impact and positive results in a feedback loop.
