I first heard this phrase via Brendan Burchard’s “High Performance” masterclass.
Simple concept: Spend 60% or more each week on strategic tasks versus lower-value tasks.
Find a primary passion, drop the rest, and increase the necessary outputs. The things that matter.
Questions like:
- What matters in my industry?
- What is timely and relevant right now?
- What’s my differentiator?
- What’s the significance of my contribution? To my “end users”
- How am I measured?
Putting this together:
For prolific; high performers increase the outputs that matter. Adding more effort in this system compounds the benefits.
For quality; in my new role as “Head of Quality” at Automattic, I set a higher standard for the work, from code to design to copywriting, from customer support to internal memos. Develop taste and apply it to the work product.
For output; the biggest lever I can control, every day, is how I focus my attention. Where 60% of my time is strategically planned and executed. The results ideally should boost the business by helping our customers grow better.
And, adding one more—influence through relationships—to show the value and drive change instead of using a top-down mandate. An active process that’s key to full-stack leadership.
