I’m open to external advisors as a way to bring in “oxygen from the outside” to help me level up my product strategy and business growth via competitive intelligence and business insights.
The core principle is, “Just ask.” Find mentors, advisors, peers, coaches, and sponsors by asking them for help on a specific topic.
I believe external feedback and validation help me work smarter, avoid biases, and validate ideas more quickly.
Benefits:
- Outside perspectives
- Better decisions
- Learn & grow faster
- New ideas
- Validate my ideas
- Receive useful feedback
This behavior could include finding mentors—many, not just one—and asking them to break down how they solved product problems, walking through behind the scenes.
Bring in oxygen from the outside.
Also, I might create “boards of advisors” for periods of my career where I seek out advice from external experts. This can be ad-hoc—or by joining a peer coaching circle like The Grand, Sidebar, Venwise, or Collaborative Gain.
It’s simple: Ask for help. Listen. Then, apply the advice.
