Copy This Template: LinkedIn Recommendation

Here’s what I believe makes a readable and effective format for a LinkedIn recommendation.

  • First name for brevity
  • Describe the person’s strengths and skills
  • Share why you enjoyed or liked working together
  • Direct experiences (“I worked with X on Y for 3 years)” are better than generic, non-specific like “Z is a great backend coder”
  • Keep it short and sweet

Think of how you would talk on the phone as job reference for the person. Natural language is best.

Here is what I wrote for David Kennedy (aka DK):

Dave is an experienced web technologist and one of the smartest people I know on the topic of accessible front-end web development. With a wide range of skills from UX and usability to product and team management, his strength is deploying useful and delightful modern web experiences without sacrificing quality and accessibility. We worked many years together on WordPress themes both in the open-source community plus for Automattic on WordPress.com/Jetpack. I admire his open and pragmatic approach to the craft.
